from the film ‘gimme shelter’ , by david and albert maysles, and charlotte zwerin altamont motor speedway, san francisco , california … december 1969 rolling stones put on free concert, and hired hell’s angels for security, offering… “all the beer they could drink”. it got ugly. 4 deaths, and and many injuries, among the 300000 in attendance. THIS IS THE DAY in december of 1969…that the “summer of love” officialy died.

A triumph of chaos.The organisers were incompetent, the bands naive, the gig should never have been played there.The stage was 39inches high, at the bottom of a hill, with 300,000 people there…………………………

Yes, the movement was completely over by 1969, and one could say 1968, when hard stuff moved into the City,etc. However, I would like to see the positive aspects of the movement ,return in a significant way, today. It is possible, as people gradually begin to care for other people again. History repeats itself.

I was there and it was a bad vibe from the moment it started until it ended. I was never so glad to leave a concert in my life.
