I blame virginia and there lack of gun laws for all of it.
The only gun control this country needs is a good eye and a steady hand!
(And a lockbox for your guns).
As long as the Gun Lobby won’t allow for a law, like all other western Nations have, to out law guns, it won’t change.
Since government has effectively disarmed many of us, we all are prone to being the victims of gun crimes. Nothing sadder than not being able to defend your family because some stupid congresswomen passed a unconsitutional gun control law.
maybe you should get shot, then before you would have wished that they WASTED the money on not getting you shot
I think you are over generalizing here. The government does spend money on enforcing all laws. Those gadgets they have to catch traffic violations are in place because they are more reliable as evidence.
The tragedy of gun violence cannot be denied. However, we have a constitutional right to bare arms. This right comes with responsibility. So any time one child shoots another, you have parents (or lack of) to blame.
If the government has disarmed you, then you are a felon. Gun crimes will never be stopped. We are heading in the only direction possible by adding years to sentencing when a gun is involved. Why take away something from decent citizens because of the acts of criminals? That makes no sense.
The ability to own a gun is a right, the shame is that we actually have to lobby congress to keep them out of private citizens gun lockers. And by the way, I don’t own a gun. The best gun control is being able to hit what you aim at. In the 90’s, Florida passed a concealed carry license, and sexual assault against women dropped 90% in 6 months,……yep you gun haters are right, guns are bad……..for criminals. Law abiding gun owners in the U.S. have prevented more crime than the police.
I watched Gord on the tv last night trotting out the same regrets because an 11 year old had been gunned down. The heartbroken parents of the child werestill in shock that this had happened to their baby.
I thought what a load of criminals we have in govt. Do they really think that their sweet smarmy words will make one iota of difference to anyone when the next time it happens they will still be saying the same things. Its ACTION we need NOW!
There is no gun control when it comes to gang bangers, burglars or car hijackers. Gun control removes the right for honest folks to have a weapon to protect themselves from the above.
The only way you can slow gun possession down would be to enforce with capital punishment. That is never going to happen in the USA
I don’t own a gun. But if I lived in an area where it was necessary for the safe welfare of me and my family I would not hesitate in purchasing one.
0This question is not about the US,its about a little boy of
eleven who was shot and killed in England whilst out playing by two thirteen to fifteen year old boys.Guns can be bought on
the street for fifty pounds but why do you want them ?
we have strict laws, with at least five years in prison
if you have one in your possession. But still children are
being shot and hardly any one is caught.More resources
must be put in place to stop this lawlessness and not in just
violent crimes, yobishness and drunken violence is on rise
but if you call the police they usually say they are to busy
and call to see you hours or days later The government will
have to deel with these problems and parent that just do not
care what there children are getting up to with the hovac
the young snubbing the law and society with the
attitude of,i am above the law and don’t care.
This is an interesting question as there are different views on this in the press in the UK. Your question draws a rather simplistic connection between someone driving a car too quickly and gun crime which has a far greater degree of complexity to it – economic, social, political factors – this means that comparison between the two is rather unfair.
The latter requires more preventative work and is not really ‘fixed’ by some technology gadget (e.g. speed cameras). The views in the press vary with the Scotsman stating just yesterday ‘Tackling youth crime: £100m waste of money’ http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1335482007 to the guardian today in the comment section writing about gun grime in the uk – Death on the streets talks about http://www.guardian.co.uk/leaders/story/0,,2155125,00.html some good progress: ‘Informed policing, working among gangs along the lines of London’s Operation Trident, does work’. So not really a waste of money then! But not one for a quick fix either!
2nd ammendment…I love it
Excellent point about motorists and its true. I think its about time the government does something because i do not think they are doing anything.
Below is a snapshot of what the government have to say on the matter;
Strengthening the law
We have:
introduced a minimum five-year sentence for people convicted of possessing an illegal firearm
made it an offence to possess an air weapon or imitation firearm in public without legal authority or reasonable excuse
increased the age limit for possession of air rifles to 17
prohibited certain air weapons that are easily converted to fire live ammunition
The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 includes provisions to:
target imitation firearms – by making it illegal to manufacture or sell imitation firearms that could be mistaken for real firearms, strengthening sentences for carrying imitation firearms, and creating tougher manufacturing standards so imitations can’t be converted to fire real ammunition
reduce illegal use of air weapons – by increasing the age limit for buying or firing air weapons without supervision
Targeting illegal firearm supplies
We’re cutting off the supply of firearms into the country by tightening security on import routes and international mail, and monitoring online firearm suppliers.
Tackling the rise in gun culture
We established the Connected (new window) programme to support local community groups in their fight against gun crime.
We also held a highly successful gun amnesty in 2003 which resulted in the handing in of 43,908 guns and 1,039,358 rounds of ammunition.
******My comments********
I think that the government in some ways are going in the right direction, however I would up the minimum sentence for possession of firearms. A 5 year sentence generally means 2.5 – 3 years, which is not enough.
In my job I have many dealings with the effects of gun crime and see little deterrant for those that carry them.
We deal and target many drug gangs whose members are suspected of having access to firearms (mostly pistols because they can be discreetly hidden). Most of the gangs and members in my area are black (I’m not being racist and I say this from my knowledge of them) and think nothing of shooting at other gang members.
Despite the heavy presence and targetting of these individuals, for them it is business as usual. They are fully aware of us but are happy to take the risk. We chip away at them but invariably as one is sent down another is released.
Its simple in the USA the gun lobby is politically strong. In the UK we have a very weak and ineffective government. They talk a good talk but are spineless when action is needed. Simple carry a gun 25 years prison no remission, and up the Human Rights mob. Unless we remove the kudos some kids feel with a gun and show that prison is the reward it will go on. I am sorry to say that if a parent knows their child has an unlawful weapon they should get 5 years also. Being soft has not solved anything. Time for action is now.
let me put this to you: about ten or twelve years ago, i heard a reasonably reliable rumour that nottinghamshire police force took delivery of a very large quantity of arms and amunition, more than would be needed by any police force, why?
are the guns coming in from abroad or is the government distributing them, you know as well as i do that drugs and guns go together, and the gov have no intentions of getting rid of drugs,if the gov want an excuse to put european police or troops on the street in britain after he has signed the traitor documents with europe, then the gov have to make a mess of the people and criminalise them, lets have a look at the stumbling blocks that have been legalised in order to demoralise the country. 1 removal of censurship.(this alows the corrupt part of the media corrupt the people quicker by removing protection.) 2. 24hr drinking, creating a slob nation.
3.human rights, creating an easyer environment for criminals to operate in, and shows contempt for victims.4. media promotion of violence and sex and car crime.i could go on, but for room.words and action of gov are the opposit of each outher, fine words evil action thats all we have, when britain is in such a bad stae it will provide him with the excuse to put e.u. troops on british soil. then you will know for certain you have been conquered, and your gov are traitors.
