How Do You Throw An American Football Accurately, Effectively And Long Distances?

Author: admin | Filed under: Football

If you haven’t guessed already i’m a Brit with very little experience in American Football as well as there being no American Football teams for miles from where I am, so i’m kinda stuck on improving. From playing with my bros and friends my favourite position is Quarterback so i need to throw the ball effectively, accurately, and far, so… any tips?

  4. its been natural for me ever since i was 2.

face your shoulder to the person you are throwing to. when you step to make the throw, have your foot pointing to 1:30 if your reciever was 12:00 on a clock. you really have to put your whole body into the throw. when you pass, make sure you snap your wrist and flick your fingers, and pretend that with your throwing hand you are reaching into the opposite side pocket of your pants. (right handed thrower: pretend you are reaching into your left pants pocket after the throw)

mmm if you have any questions i could make a video for you.

i have been to a lot of football camps and i could include a lot more stuff, but i dont feel like typing it all hahaha.

  8. Check the videos I have down there out. Watch some other videos of Tom Brady. He has perfect form for throwing a football.

You want to throw over your shoulder, not side arm. Make sure you have your fingers on the laces of the ball. I put my fingers closer to the tip rather than the middle. The first video will show you that. Then you want to step forward with your front foot pointing to your receiver, or wherever you are aiming. Plant the foot and drive off it as you throw. When you throw you want to move your hand so your pinky is facing up and at the opposite side of your body. At the end of the second video you can see Tom Brady doing this. This adds the spiral to the ball so it’s easier to catch and cuts through the wind better.

Good luck, it can be tricky and doesn’t come to some people naturally. As much as some people hate Tom Brady he really does have perfect throwing form. Many quarterbacks study his mechanics to become better passers. Watch him and learn from him.

The third video is some highlights of him playing. Don’t watch the amazing plays, but how he stands in the pocket and throws. He always is bouncing on his toes. Believe it or not footwork is very important for a QB. Plus the video is just awesome.

Edit: I can’t stress how important your legs are when throwing. Many people think it’s just the arm that does it but your legs will really help add velocity on your ball. When throwing deep step forward and lower your back shoulder so you’d throw the ball a little higher than you usually would. You want the nose of the ball facing down when it hits the target, not sideways. Makes it easier for the receiver to catch. It takes a while to get the deep ball. Don’t get discouraged, just keep working at it.
