Did England give Football to the World or they were the first people to play organised matches?

Author: admin | Filed under: Football

I’ve heard people say that the British(English) people started the game of football. Is it true? If so why is it then that they have now been overtaken by other countries in terms of playing the game?

  1. they started organised soccer

  2. The English invented Football, just like they invented Rugby and Cricket.

  3. Can i clarify that there is a difference between England and Britain. And it is reported that yes the English were the first to draw up the rules and regulations of football. In fact whilst King Henry 8th was on the throne 16th Century he had to ban football as itt was too brutal and too many people were dying of the injuries thats when the ref was introduced. x

  4. You call their matches organised ????

  5. The English established and agreed on the rules, one guy disagreed, left the comity, and then invented rugby.
That’s what my housemate keeps on saying, and he’s so proud of that story, it must be true!!haha.

  6. Yes, England is the home of modern football. However, as the concept of kicking an object around for sport is a pretty basic one, I’m sure it has been going on for thousands of years all around teh world.

As for being overtaken: England are definately still up there. But it’s true that Brazil & Argentina are probably producing the best players at the moment. I think this is likely to do with culture, and what other distractions are present. Many kids in more developed countries are now more interested in playing computer games than kicking a ball around, so they will produce less sportsmen/women than poorer nations.

  7. In England and Scotland there are still some places thay play football as it was originally. The Ashbourne Shrove Tuesday Football match in Derbyshire is a good example and goes back a fair few years, as does a similar kind of event in Kirkwall (I think) in the Orkney Islands off Scotland. They involve ‘goals’ on either end of the town for the ‘uppers’ and the ‘downers’ : two teams of local players that are determined by whether they were born or live north or south of the Henmore river. It is a bit of a scrum and the shopkeepers board up their shops to prevent damage!

  8. NO way.. get your facts right.. it was the Chinese !! But perhaps improving the game is done by the Brit… Anyhow, thanks to Mr Pierre for introducing the World Cup…
